BARRY GOLDWATER PHOTOGRAPHS MAKE ATLANTA DEBUT Goldwater in 2008: Capturing the American West Opens February 8th at House of Colors Gallery
Many knew him as a US Senator from Arizona, the 1964 Republican Presidential candidate, and the father of American Conservatism. Barry M. Goldwater was also a master photographer, a member of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain and the Professional Photographers of America, who left a record etched indelibly in time chronicling the people and places of his native Arizona. Influenced by Edward Weston and mentored by Ansel Adams whom he met during a haphazard wilderness encounter, from the early 1920s Goldwater explored rural Arizona with a photographers eye. With first a 4 x 5, twin lens Graflex and later a Rolliflex, Leica and Nikon, he photographed every corner of the Arizona landscape and captured intimate portraits of the Hopi and Navajo people. He was able to archive a piece of history which has fast falling through the hourglass of history. My photography has taken me over literally every mile of the Southwest, he said, over both poles and every major country on the globe. But it is to Arizona that I turn for my inspiration and what I think has been my best work. In the process, he created a precious historical record. During his lifetime, Goldwaters photographs were shown in more than 250 exhibits in the United States and Europe, and graced the pages of Arizona Highways magazine nearly 200 times. He authored four books on photography: People and Places (1967); Faces of Arizona (1964); Barry Goldwater and the Southwest (1976) with a forward by Ansel Adams; and Delightful Journey (1940) and (1970). The Barry Goldwater photography exhibit will run from February 8th April 25th at House of Colors Gallery, 690 Miami Circle, Suite 700.
